I could hardly move fast enough to catch the bus and believe me when I say it was a real struggle to make it up the steps to my apartment. Imagine how embarrassed I was because of my weight. I was ashamed by what I looked like, I could see people staring at me all the time. When I tried to talk to girls and I was humiliated by my disregard for my well being. I hated it when people would talk about how healthy they were now because they went for jogs or bike rides. Or even just a walk most days.
Not only was I embarrassed listening to these conversations, but I even felt like didn’t have anything to contribute, and if I did speak, I’d be ridiculed for expressing them because of my weight. My weight was obviously the main subject when anyone ever talked about me and you can imagine what I saw when I looked at myself. I can tell you that being overweight was a depressing situation for me and one that I thought that there was no way out of.
And despite how horribly depressed I was about my weight, I never really did anything about it. It just seemed like it was all too hard. Like a lot of people, I joined the local gym, but I never went. I bought the nicest looking fruit and vegetables, but I ended up throwing them out because they sat there and went bad.
Smoking didn’t help either, so I considered quitting, but as always it just seemed like there was always an excuse not to. For many many years I would go to sleep at night and wished that in the morning I would wake up and find that I had somehow lost 100 pounds over night.
Every morning I woke up and found that it was only a dream. Because I was still fat and that made me even more depressed. Somehow I realized I had to stop living in the lifestyle I was in and I had to start now to change my unhealthy eating habits. I knew deep down that it was within my power to do this, but because I was so depressed I always seemed to put it off time after time.

I even stopped drinking soda and only drank water while I was training. Well guess what. After a couple of weeks I thought this plan sucked. I didn’t like what I was doing. I got lazy and let a day go by here and there. I found the more I stopped the more I didn’t want to carry on. I realized the race was approaching and I had already failed in my plan to get ready for it.
So what was I going to do? It was about a week later when I was sitting on the couch with a friend of my, eating a pizza, and he mentioned that the company he worked for had just started doing some work for a gym that was opening near to where I lived and because of his involvement with the project, he was given a person trainer to use for free. 
He must have seen the look in my eyes because as soon as he mentioned this he stopped talking about it. I told him not to worry about it and that he should take the opportunity to use the guy because it was important to get into shape.
Now the time had come which I dreaded, He asked me a question I had hoped no one would ever ask me. He said, I can see you are so miserable about your life and your condition, so why don’t you do something about it.
Maybe you have tried, but I know you and if you really wanted to make a change, you would do it and stick to it” It was then that I realized he was right, there is that point in your life when you come to the realization that you had to make a decision and then stick to it no matter what happens.
I know that this was that point in my life. My friend knew I had tried and couldn’t stick to it, and if I told him at this stage I just couldn’t do it, then I was also telling myself that I couldn’t do it. It was at this point that I decided that nothing was going to stop me from succeeding. I told him about the race that was coming up and that now more than ever I was determined to start training and get myself into shape for it.
He just looked at me and smiled. The very next day I jumped straight back into my exercise and diet plan. Yes it was the same plan that I had before, but this time there was one big difference. I was determined to stick to it. My whole life now revolved around my exercise. I had to stick to it like nothing I had done before. I didn’t care if I couldn’t run the whole way.
The point was I was out doing my exercise and by doing this I defeated the laziness attitude that was so easy to fall into. Once I beat this laziness in me, I found that my exercises were easy to do. I even looked forward to the next time. And because of this I started to slowly loose that excess weight. It was a hard slug, but two months after I started I was able to run in the 3 mile race along with my entire family.
I don’t think there was one person there that believed I could do it and I can tell you there was no one as happy as me when I had completed it. Just because the race was over with, I kept up with my exercise and diet and eventually I lost 100 pounds of unwanted fat that I didn’t want or need. It may have taken me a long time, but I did it. I got past that point of thinking I couldn’t do it and just did it. This was the most happiest time in my whole life.
